5HC

WB 27th June 2022

This week 5HC went on a journey to China! We learnt about the incredible architecture and history, including the Great Wall of China and the Temple of Heaven and had a whistle stop tour through Beijing and Shanghai. We experienced the Peking Opera and even tried some Chinese delicacies. Using the language of Mandarin, we learnt how to ask someone what their name is: Nǐ jiào shén me míng zì? and how to say what our names are: Wǒ jiào.... We also enjoyed learning the numbers from one to ten and practised our Chinese calligraphy skills.

WB 6th June 2022

Following the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we have really enjoyed starting our new history topic whereby we are exploring the British monarchy. We started with a selection of pictures of the monarchy since 1066 and tried to put them into chronological order, then found out about the fantastic things each reign has brought.

WB 9th May 2022

In science this week, we learnt all about the lifecycle of birds. Initially we identified birds we may see in the UK. For our main activity, we had a great time role playing David Attenborough and created our own scripts in his style. We then played these over a video of a bird creating a nest, laying eggs and raising their young.

WB 3rd May 2022

This week, 5HC have been thinking about the summer and how we can keep ourselves safe in the sunshine. We discussed the benefits of the sunshine in our lives and environment and thought about the effects it has on all of us – we decided it makes us smile! We went on to learn about the importance of using sun cream, to protect our skin from harmful rays. To consolidate our learning, we wrote a postcard from a holiday, reminding our friends of the sun SMART rules we had learnt.

WB 25th April 2022

The children in 5HC are thoroughly enjoying the topic of ‘The Vikings’ in history. This week, we have explored how the Vikings came to settle in England and the impact this had on map of the country. We have learnt about what happened on the island of Lindisfarne and how this changed the course of Viking invasions which were to follow. The children have written some fantastic diary entries as monks, following this tragic event.

WB 19th April 2022

In DT this half term, year 5 are learning all about our favourite thing.... food! We have started by exploring the different ingredients of ‘Spaghetti Bolognese’ and then looked at where these come from. We thought about the journey our food takes and how it gets from the farm to our fork. We are looking forward to putting together our own recipe ideas for this in our next lesson.

WB 28th March 2022

In maths this week, year 5 have been exploring angles. We have learnt about alternate and corresponding angles, as well as those around a point. Using protractors, we have measured and drawn acute, obtuse and reflex angles. To showcase our new knowledge, we completed exciting angle investigations.

WB 21st March 2022

This week, in science, we have been learning about night and day. We discussed how we know the Earth is moving and the evidence of this that we see in the world around us. We watched an amazing video which showed us the changes that take place on our Earth as the Sun rises in the sky and even spotted other celestial bodies. Our learning was taken further as we looked at what happens as the Earth rotates on its axis, finding out all about day and night. We had a great time using the globes and torches to represent the Earth and Sun, allowing us to understand which countries have day and night at the same time.

WB 14th March 2022

In RE this week, the children in 5HC have been learning all about the Jewish faith and the branches it incorporates. We talked about the features of Judaism and the symbols that we recognised. Then we explored the differences and similarities between Orthodox and Reform Jews, including how they worship, dress and what the synagogues they visit are like.

WB 7th March 2022

In humanities, the children in Year 5 have been learning all about rivers. We began our topic with an exploration trip to Rainham Marshes where we learnt about the beginning of the River Thames and the journey it takes. Back in class, we have been learning about the different parts of a river and applied our new knowledge to our work. Amazingly, we have even been able to name several rivers, from around the world. We have even made our own rivers!
